When your “inspirational” holiday doesn’t go how you would expect … but becomes the focus of a new exhibit

I went to the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers last year and was expecting to be inspired by the colourful flower displays. I felt like there was something in the patterns and colour of the floral displays that I could take away and turn in to an art series. Although it was spectacular (and I do highly recommend everyone visits) - I couldn’t capture it in the way I wanted. None of my sketches felt right - even after trying all weekend. I was about to leave - with some amazing photos and memories - but not with that spark of creative inspiration.

So on my last moments before I started the three hour drive home - I walked around another part of the Queens Park Botanic Gardens - away from the crowds. I found myself staring up at the canopy of a huge tree. It seemed to go on forever. I was mesmerised.

I couldn’t get a good photo - but here is a small sketch.

I realised that when things feel overwhelming I do find myself staring up at the canopy. I can lift myself out of the every day problems and feel peace.

I’ve since found myself looking up more - even in other locations like this rainforest.

As a 100 day challenge earlier in the year I explored painting the feeling of relief I felt looking at the (almost) infinite expanse of the canopy.

These studies have led me to a large feature piece that will pop off the canvas and having you looking up to view the canopy. It will be at solo exhibit with the details below.

It will also feature the 100 studies which will be $40 each or $100 framed.
